WELCOME!

Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2022/23 Applied Methods in Technology Start-ups at Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) Course. The CDL Course is among the most unique opportunities available to UBC students. Those admitted into the CDL Course will work directly with early stage massively-scalable science/technology companies on discrete projects. This course is designed to teach students about the formation, financing, and management of massively scalable companies through a series of close interactions with early-stage technology companies and their potential mentors (“CDL Fellows & Associates”). This course is suitable for students pursuing careers in, or passionate about, strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, new product development, and economic development policy.

Due to the course’s special circumstances, which involve working closely with new companies seeking capital, students may be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Students must also be flexible in their schedule to accommodate meetings with ventures.

Interested students must apply to the course to be considered and should familiarize themselves with the Creative Destruction Lab as well as its various activities prior to applying for this course. You can find more information from our website at www.creativedestructionlab.com.

APPLICATION PROCESS & COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

The application process is divided into 4 phases.

1) Deadline to Apply - Friday, May 27, 2022
This is the first chance we have to understand a little bit more about who you are. A chance to get a surface level view on your interests as well as some administrative information we need from applicants leading up to course registration.

2) Invites to Interview - Wednesday, June 1, 2022

We ask that applicants leave June 1, 2021 - June 17, 2022 as open as possible as we will be sending out confirmations for interviews on May 30, 2022. We will also send out emails to those who do not receive an interview.

3) Course Interviews - On a Rolling Basis, Starting Wednesday, June 2, 2022
A 20-minute interview will be scheduled for the CDL course team to dig a little deeper into your aspirations, why you are excited to work with early stage ventures, as well as providing you with a platform to ask us any questions. Ultimately, we want to make sure the CDL Course is a good fit for you, as much as we want to make sure you are a good fit for the CDL Course. Interviews will be conducted online via Zoom, Google Hangouts, or conference phone line.

4) Acceptances - On a Rolling Basis, Starting Monday, June 27, 2022
Not all students are accepted into the course. Thus, we will send out acceptances by mid-July, giving students some time to accept or decline the invitation.

OUR EXPECTATIONS:

Grading will largely reflect the quality of a student's contribution to their CDL company; students are expected to work with venture founders and CDL staff to identify the projects they will work on for assignments. Students must be prepared to be proactive in identifying and executing projects, and they understand that taking a passive role in this process will make success in this course unlikely. Attendance is required for all CDL Course classes. Exceptions are made, however these are based on a variety of factors.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Please complete this form by 11:59pm on May 27, 2022 to be considered for the course. The CDL Course Manager will share any pertinent details following the deadline.
