The Social Information Processing & Mental Health in Autism (SIMH-A) Study
Thank you so much for your interest in our study! Below is more information about our study.
The goal of this research is to better understand the impact of social information processing and perspective-taking (i.e., ways of perceiving and interpreting social information, including what others are thinking or feeling) on the psychological well-being of autistic young adults.
What does participation require/ what will the visit look like?
Participating in our study involves completing questionnaires online at home and one visit to our lab at UBC (if you live in the Lower Mainland) OR one remote study visit held via Zoom.
- Part 1 (At home session): Approximately 5 days prior to your scheduled in-person or online study visit, you will be asked to complete some questionnaires. This will take about 45-50 minutes.
- Part 2 (UBC or Zoom visit): Your in-person or online study visit will take about 2 hours, and it involves completing some questionnaires and cognitive tasks.
- Participants completing the study in-person will be asked to participate in an interview designed to assess different ways of thinking, communicating, perceiving and interacting that are associated with the autism spectrum. This task will take an additional 45-60 minutes.
- For participants completing the study online, this session will be held over Zoom. To protect your identity, you may use an alternate name for your log-in ID and mute your microphone when it is not needed (e.g., when completing self-report questionnaires or self-directed experimental tasks); however, your video must remain on throughout the study session except during breaks. This is to allow the research team to check in with you throughout the session and monitor for signs of fatigue or distraction.
What are the benefits of taking part in this research?
We hope the information gathered in this study will contribute to a better understanding of how people process social information based on factors such as loneliness, mental health, stressful experiences, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We expect this study will critically inform efforts to predict and counter mental health challenges in autistic young adults. This research may also play a key role in promoting self-understanding and healthy coping for youth as they transition into adulthood.
Participants will receive $15 per hour via Amazon Gift Card for completing in-person and online sessions.
Confidentiality

If you are found to be ineligible for the study, or decide that you no longer want to participate, we will destroy all the information we’ve collected today once the study is complete, to ensure your privacy.
